“[They (iPads)] provide no educational function in the classroom. Students use them as toys.” That’s the sentiment of one teacher in the Auburn (Maine) School Department revealed in a survey of the district’s teachers and students in grades seven through twelve. Apple and the Maine Department of Education are offering districts throughout the state the opportunity to either upgrade existing ipads or macbooks, or swap one for the other at no cost. The district decided to send out the survey to get input from teachers and students.
Teachers and students overwhelmingly chose laptops over iPads, with 89% of teachers requesting the switch to laptops and 74% of students making the same request. The results of the survey were recently presented to the School Committee by District Technology Director Peter Robinson (@peterkerobinson) in which he stated that the survey findings “made the decision for us.”
Some more interesting feedback from the survey:
- “The iPads are largely students’ gaming devices” -Teacher
- “WE NEED LAPTOPS!!!” -Student
- “The iPads are a disaster” -Teacher
- “IPads are easier to play games on and get addicted to” -Student
