A survey of school districts by the Oklahoma State School Boards Association found 1,530 teaching positions were removed over the past school year, according to results made public Monday. Another 1,351 support staff positions also were cut.

While Oklahoma schools cut nearly 3,000 positions last year, there are teacher vacancies that remain challenging to fill. More than 540 teacher positions were open as of Aug. 1, according to survey results. At least 365 emergency teaching certificates have been approved by the  state since July 1, and another 360 are expected to be considered later this week, according to the state Education Department.
